Using Debit/Credit card while traveling: security measures (updated 5/12/2010) 
Due to the increasing amount of fraud, the credit union will be forced to block usage of our credit and debit cards in certain countries. If you plan to travel outside of the United States, please check with the credit union prior to leaving.
A good alternative to the debit/credit card is the prepaid Visa which is available at the credit union. 

Countries that are currently blocked: China Cyprus, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mexico, Romania, Singapore and Thailand. It is important to let us know if you are traveling, even if not to these countries, so a note can be placed on your account for unusual activities.

Criegs List Scam (updated 1/11/10)

Advertisements have been posted on Craigslist as part of member recruitment scams nationwide.  The ads solicit current credit union members and offer $75.00 or more for their assistance in gaining membership for ineligible individuals. This scam is targeting credit unions and members across the country.

The following are samples of Craigslist ads target credit union members for this recruitment scam:

If your a ABC Credit Union Member MAKE SOME EXTRA $$
This is NOT a scam! I am willing to call you and discuss extensively! I need a ABC Credit Union Member to sponsor me into the credit union. I am willing to pay $100 USD for this service. Please email me and we can discuss this in detail. This is a 1 day process and I want to become a member for investment account/interest rate purposes.

Need to find a XYZ Credit Union Member
I was just approved for a visa credit card with XYZ Federal Credit Union and they called me and said that they can not process the application if I do not know any existing member or if I am not employed at one of the list of companies they have. To become a member you have to know a member. So now my app is on hold until I can find someone who is already a member. If you know someone, please tell them to contact me.  I am willing to pay $500. And all they ask for is the members name and member number. Thanks.

ABC and XYZ Members Needed!!!
If you are a ABC or XYZ Federal Credit Union member we will pay you $75.00 per member to sponsor other that would like to join the credit union but do not meet the membership requirements. Please email for details.

Text Message Fraud (2009)
Text messages are being sent to members with a telephone number to call saying their debit/credit card has been restricted.
DO NOT CALL THE NUMBER OR GIVE ANY INFORMATION - THIS IS A SCAM.
Never give your card information over the phone unless you initiate the call to a reliable and trusted source.

**Debit/Credit Card Security Information**
Though Peoples Advantage FCU is committed to the highest level of security in issuing your cards and maintaining them in our system, we have no control over the security measures taken by the merchants and businesses where you conduct transactions. When a security breach or fraud issue occurs, we are notified and take steps necessary to determine if a card must be blocked. Upon blocking the card, the card number can no longer be duplicated and/or used fraudulently and we would send you a notice to make you aware of the problem. We quickly issue a new card in its place to avoid as much inconvenience as possible. For this reason however, we recommend always having an alternate source of funds available in case your card number has been identified in a security breach and a block is necessary.
